Sea Witch Review

Sea Witch

Sarah Henning

Sea Witch was the September book of the month for my FB Book Club. I didn’t want to post a review until I had a chance to do my live discussion with my group.  Make sure you join us there if you want to help pick our book each month and join us for a live discussion at the end of the month. We have a great book for October, it’s Seashells, Spells & Caramels by Erin Johnson.  It’s a super cute book that I highly recommend, but I’m getting off topic.

I gave this 4 stars on my goodreads, but in my heart it’s a 3.5.  Goodreads really needs to offer half star  options.  This was a cute story and I did enjoy it, but I felt the ending was rushed and not as well thought out and planned as the rest of the book.  I was really excited to read this story and to get a cool back story on the Sea Witch.  I found a lot of the events in this book predictable, but I was okay with that.  I also found this to be just a tad dark . That worked for me since I was already familiar with the original Hans Christian Anderson version of The Little Mermaid, but I can see how those who are more familiar with the happy Disney version might be put off.

There were things at the end I do wish had been done differently with more thought.  I think this had a lot of potential to be a great story, but the end got too rushed.  I know this is a story of the Sea Witch so a dark ending was necessary, but this went beyond that and was just a lonely ending that didn’t totally make sense.

I think this was worth reading and I did enjoy it, but I think the ending was poorly done and while I won’t say it ruined the book, it sure lowered it in my opinion.
