Seashells, Spells and Caramels
by Erin Johnson Book Review
I came across this Cozy Witch Mystery by chance while I was searching for the perfect October read. I wanted a Halloween-ish book that wasn’t all gore or dripping with vampire love stories. Something light and cute but still filled my quota of magic for October. This book definitely fit the bill!
Seashells, Spells and Caramels follows Imogen Banks as her life literally goes up in flames right after everything had seemed to fall into place and her dreams of opening her own bakery was within grasp. She had also thought the cake she had baked to enter the contest for new Royal Baker for the Water Kingdom (where ever that was) had also been turned to ash. Just as she’s dealing with the sudden loss of her entire life’s savings to pay for the damage to her apartment building, she is greeted by a messanger that has given her a passport to France to compete in the contest.
With nothing left to lose, she spends the very last of her money to get to Bijou Mer before it’s too late to enter the baking contest. When Imogen arrives in France, she is told that Bijou Mer becomes an island at night when the tide rolls in. She also finds that when it becomes an island, a secret magical world also comes to life. Imogen gets swept up in all the sights as she finds her way to the Water Kingdom’s castle grounds.
Having found herself in not just any baking competition, but a magical baking competition, Imogen realizes that she has magical abilities that secured her entry to the competition, but those abilities might not be enough in comparison to the other witches and wizards she’s competing against. She must figure our how to use her powers to win the competition or she really will be left with not only nothing, but failure as a baker as well.
Amongst magical spells, new magical friends and not so friendly competitors and judges, Imogen tries her best to create delicious desserts while finding her place in this new bewitching world. If only all fingers weren’t pointed at her when a fellow competitor drops dead during the competition. Now Imogen must hurry to discover who the real killer is before she becomes the next target.
This short, but deliciously magical mystery was exactly what I wanted as I snuggled up in a blanket and drank my morning coffee on a brisk October morning. I loved this book from beginning to end, absorbed in the magical world Erin Johnson created, drooling over the delectable baked goodies and laughing, gasping and feeling my heart pound in suspense and excitement as this cozy witch mystery came to a close.
The best part was knowing that I don’t have to say goodbye to Imogen and her new friends anytime soon. This series is almost complete, with 7 books in total so far, so I will be able to dive back into the magic Erin Johnson has whipped up for readers like me who are eager to read on and see what adventures are next!
This is a definite must read if you are looking for a short magical read this Halloween season!
